The Miracle Worker

Hellen Keller was trapped in a dark, silent world. Anne Sullivan found a way into that world, and allowed for one of the greatest stories of personal triumph of all time to find a voice.

Anne Bancroft is brilliant as the young woman who arrives at the Keller house with a gritty determination that this deaf and blind person should be treated equally with others. There is no instruction manual. Suffering with her own limited sight, and the pain of her extraordinary past, she disciplines Helen, and then brings her into the world of language and communication.

Without Anne, Helen is trapped forever. Angry, confused, lacking even the most simple tools to understand and deal with her world. By extraordinary grace, the Miracle Worker arrives.

Yet, Anne cannot move forward in her life without the love of Helen. Her own pain and anger will not be quenched until that angry child comes to her, is held by her, and receives her message- Anne loves Helen.

We should all be washed in this water.

Zodiac

Not great. The murder scenes are grisly and disturbing - and for what? It is an entertainment that does not seek depth.

Still, in the telling of a story there are things to consider. How do marriages hold up - or not - as individuals pursue their quests, or their obsessions?

In contrast to Eric O'Neill's wife in Breach, it seems that the Greysmiths couldn't hold it together as the demons within and without take Paul to greater and greater lengths.

Ringo (a dog)

Ringo is flexible and exuberant.
He has no use for derision and insult.
If you lose your temper with him, he won't hold it against you.
He will sniff the wind, clear his mind, and be ready to play.

Tenacious D

In Breach, Eric O'Neill exhibits tenacity, resourcefulness, self-sacrifice, and patriotism - in defense of his country. Seems like he got a lot from his father. He really does get on the boat, do his job, and come home.

Eric shares some of the love and grace that he was given with his new surrogate father - Robert Hanssen. Although the relationship is riddled with deceit, doesn't some get through? Robert appears broken at the end of the movie, afraid and asking for prayers. Let's pray for this spy gone bad. Perhaps he can start anew.

March Kayaking

Kayaking in Manhasset Bay. Brisk wind from the Southeast. Small sailboats frolicking. Just enough cold and wind to put a little danger into the workout.

Ipod playing Shuffle Songs. Thoreau, Rolling Stones, Bette Midler, others.

Water very clean and cold.

Thoreau heard the thundering Fitchburg Railroad, and lamented that, appearances aside, the earth had not yet met the race worthy of it.

But it still may.

Let us step to the music that we hear, however measured or far away.
